I have created a new group dedicated to looking deeply into, as well as debating religion and it's place in our society. This includes effects, both positive and negative, to be debated. My goal for this group is to harbor educated discussions on the topics, meaning academic debates on the validity of religious texts, beliefs, and their combined effects on society (politically, scholastically, scientifically, etc).
A secondary goal of this group is to help welcome people who are natural skeptics. I know I faced a lot of challenges growing up in the "bible belt" when I first got the notion that perhaps I didn't believe all of what they were feeding me. As a result, my growth toward (what I view as true) freedom and thinking with a truly open mind was stunted. I wish to help others who may feel fear of being ostracized by family and community for their beliefs, or non beliefs as it may be. To let them know they are not alone.
So feel free to join in the debate, I expect it will be a lively one as the topic tends to ring deeply with people.
